Slide control valve for steam applications in process plants

Precise control of water vapor using an automated slide gate valve with an i/p positioner.

In an industrial production facility, the steam supply from the boiler room needed to be designed to be reliable and precisely controllable. The goal was to optimize energy use while ensuring stable process conditions. The existing solution was unable to meet the requirements for control accuracy and operational safety.

At a glance

  • Industry: Process industry
  • Application: Steam inlet control in a production plant
  • Medium / Process: Water vapor
  • Challenge: Inaccurate control, inefficient energy use, unsuitable standard solution
  • STASTO solution: DN65 sliding gate control valve with pneumatic actuator and i/p positioner
  • Result: Stable process, improved controllability and optimized energy use

The challenge

In a process plant, steam was used to supply a production step. Steam flow control was handled via an existing standard valve that did not meet the requirements for precision and dynamic response. Fluctuating process conditions led to inefficient energy use and made consistent production more difficult.

In addition, demanding operating conditions were present: elevated temperatures, varying pressure conditions, and high flow requirements. The existing piping dimension was not optimally matched to the desired control characteristics. An adjustment of the system components was required to enable stable and reproducible control.

The STASTO solution

A DN65 sliding gate control valve was used, combined with a pneumatic actuator and an i/p positioner. This design enables particularly precise and fast control of gaseous media such as water vapor.

The choice fell on a sliding gate valve, as this valve technology, due to its design, offers low friction and high control accuracy. In combination with the positioner, continuous adjustment of the flow rate to the process requirements could be achieved.

For integration into the existing system, the piping was adapted accordingly. This made it possible to optimally match the valve size to the operating conditions. The solution was implemented in close coordination with the plant operator, ensuring that both mechanical and control-system requirements were taken into account.

The result

By using the automated sliding gate control valve, significantly more stable control of the steam flow was achieved. The process runs more consistently and responds precisely to load changes.

The solution improves operational safety by reducing fluctuations and preventing critical conditions. At the same time, the more precise dosing enables more efficient use of the steam applied.

Even in continuous operation, the solution proves reliable and low-maintenance. The combination of suitable valve technology and automation contributes to stable and cost-effective plant operation.

Added value for machine builders

  • Precise control even with demanding process media
  • Simple integration into existing control systems
