Coolant valve solution for turning, drilling and milling centers

Reliable valve technology for continuous coolant supply in highly integrated machine tools.

In multifunctional turn-drill-mill centers, a constant and reliable coolant supply is crucial for process stability and tool life. The valve technology used must withstand high pressures and also function reliably under contaminated media conditions. In this application, a robust valve solution for continuous operation in machining was implemented.

The challenge

Turning, drilling and milling centers combine several machining operations in a single machine and therefore place high demands on the peripheral equipment. Throughout the entire machining process, tools must be continuously supplied with coolant in order to reduce thermal loads and ensure consistent machining quality.

The cooling medium used is often contaminated with particles and is conveyed under high pressure. At the same time, machine operation requires a high switching frequency as well as reliable function over long operating times. Under these conditions, conventional valve solutions reach their limits, as they react sensitively to contamination or are not designed for permanently high pressure ranges.

The STASTO solution

For this application, a valve solution based on coaxial valves was implemented. This design is constructed in such a way that the medium flows straight through the valve, thereby minimizing pressure losses and reducing deposits.

The valves used are designed for high operating pressures and are characterized by high insensitivity to contamination. This ensures that the switching functions remain stable even with contaminated coolant. In close coordination with the machine manufacturer, the valve technology was integrated into the existing machine concept and adapted to the specific process requirements. The focus was on a compact design, a clearly defined interface to automation, and a low-maintenance design.

The result

By using the appropriate valve technology, a reliable and constant coolant supply could be ensured throughout the entire machining process. The solution contributes to a high operational reliability of the machine and supports stable continuous operation.

At the same time, reliable cooling has a positive effect on the service life of the tools and the overall system. Maintenance efforts are reduced, as unplanned downtimes due to valve failures can be avoided.
