Fresh and wastewater systems in aircraft are tested for leak-tightness, flow capacity, and functionality at defined intervals. These test processes require robust, tightly sealing valve solutions that operate reliably even under demanding media conditions. STASTO provided support in the selection and integration of suitable valves for the corresponding test bench.
At a glance
- Industry: Aerospace engineering / test bench construction
- Application: Leak-tightness and functional testing of fresh water and wastewater systems
- Medium / Process: Water, wastewater, test media with possible contaminants
- Challenge: High tightness while handling contaminated media
- STASTO solution: Pneumatically actuated coaxial valves in a pressure-resistant, dirt-insensitive design
- Result: Fault-free and reproducible testing of the water systems
The challenge
All safety-relevant functions of an aircraft are subject to prescribed inspection intervals. These also include the fresh water and wastewater systems, which are tested for leak tightness, flow capacity, and other functional parameters after a defined number of flight hours.
In the testing process, water and wastewater media are used, where contamination cannot be completely ruled out.
The valves used must therefore meet two key requirements: absolutely reliable sealing and high insensitivity to dirt particles.
Conventional valve designs reach their limits under these conditions, particularly when high operating pressures are combined with potentially contaminated media. In addition to the pure sealing function, secure integration into an automated test bench was also required.
The STASTO solution
Pneumatically actuated coaxial valves were used, which, due to their design, are characterized by a straight-through flow and high pressure resistance.
This design is particularly suitable for applications where both high tightness and insensitivity to dirt are required.
The pneumatic actuation enables precise integration into the automated test sequence. At the same time, the compact design ensures space-saving installation in the control cabinet or system setup of the test bench.
In close coordination with the plant manufacturer, the valve solution was selected with regard to pressure range, connection pattern and control concept. The decisive factor was not only the individual component, but its reliable function within the overall system.
The result
With the implemented solution, uninterrupted testing of the water and wastewater systems can be carried out.
The coaxial valves used ensure reliable shut-off even under demanding media conditions.
Pneumatic automation supports a reproducible test sequence. At the same time, the dirt-insensitive design reduces maintenance effort and increases the availability of the test bench in continuous operation.
For the operator, this means a technically stable solution that meets the normative requirements in the aviation environment and enables reliable quality assurance of the water systems.
