Automated compressed air and water supply for stretch blow molding machines

Modular automation packages for compressed air and cooling water systems in PET bottle production.

In stretch blow molding machines, precisely controlled compressed air and cooling water systems are essential for a stable production process. However, the large number of individual components results in high coordination effort in design, procurement, and assembly. STASTO has developed a structured, pre-assembled solution for the functional bundling of the required automation components.

At a glance

  • Industry: Packaging industry / mechanical engineering
  • Application: Stretch blow molding machine for PET bottle production
  • Medium / Process: Compressed air and cooling water supply
  • Challenge: High integration effort due to numerous individual items and complex piping
  • STASTO solution: Two pre-assembled automation packages per machine (compressed air / water)
  • Result: Simplified procurement, clear structuring and reduced complexity in project execution

The challenge

Stretch blow molding machines place high demands on media supply. For reliable operation, complex compressed air and cooling water control systems as well as appropriately designed piping are required.

Depending on the machine type, this results in numerous individual items for valves, fittings, connecting elements and other pneumatic components. These must be coordinated in terms of design, procured, picked and provided in a way that is suitable for assembly. The organizational effort increases in particular when each item is managed and administered individually.

Standardized individual components alone do not solve this challenge. What was required was a systemic approach in which the media supply is designed as a functional unit and provided in a structured manner.

The STASTO solution

For each machine type, a bill of materials for the compressed air system and a separate bill of materials for the water system was created in close coordination with the machine manufacturer.

The previously numerous individual line items were functionally consolidated and transferred into two clearly defined STASTO automation packages – one for compressed air and one for water.

Each package includes all associated components in a structured form and is clearly assigned to the respective machine configuration.

Technically, the focus was on:

  • Coordinated pneumatic and valve components
  • Defined interface design
  • Assembly-appropriate compilation
  • clear labeling in accordance with the customer bill of materials

By pre-structuring the components, system integration was simplified. The solution is not to be understood as a standalone product, but as a project-specific configured automation package that functionally maps the media supply and supports the technical implementation.

The result

By consolidating into two automation packages, the ordering process has been significantly simplified. Instead of a large number of individual items, the customer receives two clearly defined units per machine.

This leads to:

  • greater clarity in procurement and logistics
  • Reduced error susceptibility during order picking
  • clear assignment of the components to machine type and position
  • stable and reproducible implementation of the media supply

In continuous operation, users benefit from a structured, traceable system architecture that supports maintenance and spare parts management.

Added value for machine builders

  • Reduction of administrative effort in procurement and scheduling
  • Simplified integration of the media supply into the overall machine
  • Clear structuring of complex pneumatic and water systems
  • Improved transparency in bills of materials and documentation
  • More efficient project execution for variants or machine type changes

This solution is particularly suitable for

  • Stretch blow molding machines
  • Packaging machine
  • Plastics processing systems
  • Machines with complex compressed air and cooling water control
  • Systems with a high variety of variants
